Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product for Beginning the Season We created a lawn care plan on Scotts and it recommended this product for our first treatment (centipede sod planted in 2009). Started working within a week. Great product and does what it says. Helped get our yard off to a good start. Highly recommended. We also recommend getting a lawn care plan.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I applied for the first time this year. So far have not seen any crabgrass in St. Augustine grass like I did in the past. Will use every year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Over promoted for performance-when it comes to Crabgrass Crabgrass is the first WORD on the product. However; it comes in last on performance. I have used all the products that concern crab grass. At best a minimal effect on crabgrass but does seem to kill and prevent henbit and other cold weather emergent weeks. To give this product a better review it would need to act faster. I have to admit CRABGRASS is near impossible to deal with. So I also, spot kill individual mature CG with Pure Vinegar. I still recommend it. I use a scotts drop spreader which gives me the precise amount to use. Cut your yard as short as possible if heavily infested, then spread it early morning when DEW has formed or the night before. This seems to activate on the small leaf stems and absorbe the Halts. AAA+++ no ODOR. Be safe with Kids walking recently treated areas without shoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best to use twice We have a friend who work for a University lawn research facility and he told me use this product once early in the year (FEB) and then again in 6-8 weeks. He said don't use the weed & feed as your second treatment, but use it 6-8 weeks after the second treatment of Halts. Now this recommendation may only be applicable in the Virginia area as that is where he does research. So far it is working - not one sign of crabgrass yet this year. I have used this product for many years and like it very much. Now that we know the trade secret, it may be even more effective and I will like it even more! Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Please don't stop manufacturing this product! I've been using Scott's Halts for 12 years on my N. Florida lawn, where we have a year-round growing season. It is a constant battle to fight off the weeds from my neighbors weed-choked yards. This product is excellent on crab grass as I only occasionally find any in the yard, which is over an acre. It helps somewhat with winter weeds, which are a huge problem; henbit, in particular. I also spray broadleaf winter weeds, especially oxalis, so this granular product is not the only product in my arsenal, but it is essential. My lawn is a mix of Emerald Zoysia and centipede. The Zoysia can typically withstand liquid broadleaf herbicide, but centipede can't take the strength needed to have any effect on the weeds. I do not want, and will not buy, a weed & feed as I use organic matter to fertilize my lawn. Additionally, you should not be fertilizing and putting down herbicide at the same time. This is a marketing tool for people trying to save time, but the optimal application timing for each are not the same. Both Home Depot and Lowes have stopped carrying this product over the years, and I am lucky to still be able to buy online. I have a feeling, though, that Scotts will stop selling Halts at some point, and will only offer it through its weed & feed products. I don't know what I will do at that time, but it is going to be a big problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It Helped While I still had crabgrass, it was much less and in one or two more years I should be rid of it. I have four acres and cannot use Halts on all four acres but it definitely helped the part I consider the lawn.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hit or miss The products works- sometimes. While there is a several month window over which the product can be used, it seems to me that it works best when used earlier as opposed to later in the application cycle. The product is also expensive. When used as part of four step annual application, it gets really expensive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4 months My crabgrass stays prevented until mid summer in the St Louis area, then it needs a reapplication.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great preventative product if used properly I purchased this product early in the year and applied it to my yard just as the grass began to green-up. I noticed I had crab grass in my yard in select areas. After applying the product it not only killed what was there, it also kept it from coming back all year with just 1 application!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job My neighbor's lawn is overrun with crabgrass. I have been diligent about keeping halts on my lawn (bermuda) per recommended schedule and don't have a problem at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from better lawn use as directed and lawn will look better each year. product works good but is more costly than competition.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Will it Workd I just bought a Scott's Elite Rotary Spreader and Halts® Crabgrass & Grassy Weed Preventer. The bag says, and website says, set it at 2 1/4. I've done that, very little product seems to be emerging. It's not clumpy and the spinners are spinning, but I'm skeptical. I watched a video for this exact product and in the video, it seems to broadcast copiously

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My accidental experiment I used this product and it didn't seem to work. However, I had an interesting incident with it. While using my spreader on a hill, it tipped briefly and spilled a decent chunk of material on the lawn. I scraped up what I could, but over time, what was left washed down the hill. Where the bulk of the product fell, the grass died. I wasn't surprised at that. But the picture shows what happened with the product that washed down the hill. The grass is green and weed free. Beautiful. The first pic is from about 8 weeks ago, second pic is today. What I conclude is, though applied according to directions, the application was not heavy enough. That's Scott's fault. My concern is that the directions "stretch" the application area beyond what is realistic to make the price seem more favorable? I'll use again next year, but at heavier rates.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does weed n feed have a shelf life? I purchased two large bags of weed n feed and it had large clumps and the bottom of the bag was a solid. I spread the weed n feed but it seems to not be working as well as the last 8 years. the weed killer in the bag is not working at all I returned a bag and got another one not sure if Im going tp keep it

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hope this works Just finished application. Couldn't see too much coming out of my spreader. Setting was set at 2 1/4, just like the instructions said. Mabey this is pretty powerful? Any input is welcome!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The product works ok Some of my crab grass and weeds have died off but not all. May have to try using it again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent on Moss I received this product to late in the year to test out its effectiveness on Crabgrass, so I gave it a shot on moss. I had some limited success with some of the moss turning brown but it didn’t destroy all of it. It could have been that I didn’t apply enough too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Can't See a Difference Yet I've been dealing with some medical problems, so my neighbor distributed the weed preventer. Since my injury, I have not been able to do much walking, but the backyard is small and I did do that area, over a few days. As of the weather now, it's too gosh darn cold to go out. I will update this IF I see a difference, but so far that is not the case.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Crabgrass preventer I like this product for spring, before crabgrass can take root. In the fall it works well, but doesn't kill the grass.
Date published: 2017-12-15
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wont know till the Spring! I only gave it 3 stars because I don't know yet if it really works. I put down the Scotts crabgrass preventer earlier this Fall and will wait to see how it does in containing and preventing the spread of the pesky crabgrass. I will follow up my review in the Spring of 2018.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from my weeds I applied this product yet have not seen any improvement in weed control. I realize that it may take time for this product to work but I was hoping to have seen improvements within a reasonable amount of time. I will keep waiting and hoping for improvement.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So far so good 1st time using Halts. Have noticed the crab grass seems to be subsiding a bit. It is nov-dec in ALABAMA and the grass has gone dormant. Anyhow my hopes are high!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It works, but could be better I apply this every year according to the directions. It helps but I still get crabgrass throughout the lawn. I know this product helps with the crabgrass since one year I went with a company to apply organic fertilizer for me and my lawn was overtaken by crabgrass by August. I went back to this product ever since to help control the crabgrass. I wish it was more effective where it was applied.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This product wasn't it for my yard I bought this product because it's name is supposed to be the best. I bought 3 bags to cover front and back yard. I applied and I thought it worked my whole yatd was brown, but to my surprise I got even more weeds after 2 good rains of different weeds from before. I don't understand followed the directions on the bag. I choose this because I researched each weed I saw in my yard and they were on the back of the bag.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn’t work for Poannua. Used this product for the last two years applying on Bermuda in South Carolina in November and February trying to eliminate Poaannua and it was completely ineffective and there is no crabgrass but the poannua is worse than ever. Won’t buy again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It works a little. Its not that effective or strong. Slows some growth.
Date published: 2022-04-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best I live in phoenix, so Spring comes earlier some years. Bermuda lawn, not overseeded. Non-hybrid Bermuda grows when soil hits 65 degrees. For this reason, When it was forecasted to be in the upper 80's, lows around 50, I applied this product. Then, it cooled down, so I applied it again 4 weeks later, same temperature range. Although the crabgrass was prevented to some degree, I find myself pulling random spots out daily. I do not remember the brand of pre-emergent I used last year, but wish I could as it was 100% effective. It was not a household name. I had two problem spots in my yard in previous years, and made sure to cover them this year before soil temperature reached 58 degrees with Scotts. There are better products, but supply chain issues limited my options. The product isn't perfect. Also, i don't think it did anything to prevent clovers or sedge, but I have no way of knowing if I would have had more trouble had I not applied this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hope it works on crabgrass, failed on winter weeds I actually was on the ball in getting the Halts down as a pre-emergent in the fall. I was pleased I could finally stop the Chickweed, Henbit and Poa Anna that have plagued me for many seasons. Well that was an epic fail. I think my yard it worse this year and yes I got it down in time in the fall. I just reapplied 2 weeks ago for crabgrass and I swear the Rest of the weeds grew taller over night just to spite me... LOL! So fingers crossed this at least works for crab grass, cause so far I have flushed 2 bags down the to use it as a pre-emergence for winter weeds. If this site allows updates I will update regarding its crabgrass fighting abilities when I see later this spring.
