- Apply this pre-emergent weed killer in the early spring to a dry lawn or in the fall; rain, snow, or freezing weather after application will not affect the performance of this product

Precautions
- Don't use on newly seeded grass lawns until after the fourth mowing. On newly sprigged areas, wait five months before application.
- Don't plant grass seed for four growing months or sprig an area for five months after use of this product.
- Don't apply more frequently than twice a year. Allow at least a two month interval between applications.
- Don't rake or aerify after application, as the Halts(R) chemical barrier in the soil will be disturbed.
Disposal Methods
Nonrefillable container. If empty: Do not reuse or refill this container. Place in trash or offer for recycling if available. If partly filled: Call your local solid waste agency for disposal instructions. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain.

Description
Scotts® Halts® Crabgrass & Grassy Weed Preventer prevents the germination of listed lawn weeds so you can enjoy your lawn. In early spring, apply when lawn is dry to prevent the germination of crabgrass, foxtail, spurge, barnyardgrass, fall panicum, goosegrass* and oxalis all season long (*for goosegrass control, repeat application in 8 weeks). Apply in the fall (August-October) to prevent moss (except in California), or to prevent the germination of Poa annua, henbit, corn speedwell, and chickweed. Scotts® Halts® Crabgrass & Grassy Weed Preventer is for use on all lawns and grass types (with the exception of Dichondra or Bentgrass lawns). Rain, snow, or freezing weather after application will not affect the performance of this product. Please note, this product controls crabgrass in its early stages of growth. Wont know till the Spring!
I only gave it 3 stars because I don't know yet if it really works. I put down the Scotts crabgrass preventer earlier this Fall and will wait to see how it does in containing and preventing the spread of the pesky crabgrass. I will follow up my review in the Spring of 2018.

my weeds
I applied this product yet have not seen any improvement in weed control. I realize that it may take time for this product to work but I was hoping to have seen improvements within a reasonable amount of time. I will keep waiting and hoping for improvement.

So far so good
1st time using Halts. Have noticed the crab grass seems to be subsiding a bit. It is nov-dec in ALABAMA and the grass has gone dormant. Anyhow my hopes are high!

It works, but could be better
I apply this every year according to the directions. It helps but I still get crabgrass throughout the lawn. I know this product helps with the crabgrass since one year I went with a company to apply organic fertilizer for me and my lawn was overtaken by crabgrass by August. I went back to this product ever since to help control the crabgrass. I wish it was more effective where it was applied.

This product wasn't it for my yard
I bought this product because it's name is supposed to be the best. I bought 3 bags to cover front and back yard. I applied and I thought it worked my whole yatd was brown,but to my surprise I got even more weeds after 2 good rains of different weeds from before. I don't understand followed the directions on the bag. I choose this because I researched each weed I saw in my yard and they were on the back of the bag.

Didn’t work for Poannua.
Used this product for the last two years applying on Bermuda in South Carolina in November and February trying to eliminate Poaannua and it was completely ineffective and there is no crabgrass but the poannua is worse than ever. Won’t buy again.

Not the best
I live in phoenix, so Spring comes earlier some years. Bermuda lawn, not overseeded. Non-hybrid Bermuda grows when soil hits 65 degrees. For this reason, When it was forecasted to be in the upper 80's, lows around 50, I applied this product. Then, it cooled down, so I applied it again 4 weeks later, same temperature range. Although the crabgrass was prevented to some degree, I find myself pulling random spots out daily. I do not remember the brand of pre-emergent I used last year, but wish I could as it was 100% effective. It was not a household name. I had two problem spots in my yard in previous years, and made sure to cover them this year before soil temperature reached 58 degrees with Scotts. There are better products, but supply chain issues limited my options. The product isn't perfect. Also, i don't think it did anything to prevent clovers or sedge, but I have no way of knowing if I would have had more trouble had I not applied this product.

Hope it works on crabgrass, failed on winter weeds
I actually was on the ball in getting the Halts down as a pre-emergent in the fall. I was pleased I could finally stop the Chickweed, Henbit and Poa Anna that have plagued me for many seasons. Well that was an epic fail. I think my yard it worse this year and yes I got it down in time in the fall. I just reapplied 2 weeks ago for crabgrass and I swear the Rest of the weeds grew taller over night just to spite me... LOL! So fingers crossed this at least works for crab grass, cause so far I have flushed 2 bags down the to use it as a pre-emergence for winter weeds. If this site allows updates I will update regarding its crabgrass fighting abilities when I see later this spring.

Killed my grass
I dont recommed for Kentucky blue grass. It killed everything in the area I put it down in except the crab grass:-(

Sub par product
I bought this product early March and applied the second week of March in New England so well before crabgrass germinates. I followed all the directions and this weekend I have crabgrass sprouting up and other grass like weeds that I have never had before. There is definitely less crabgrass then I had last year but still much more then I had expected

How to use
I would be nice to have a more thorough explanation of how to apply. Not just on dry no watering. We have rain almost daily and would be nice to know if I put it on when the lawn is dry but it rains an hour later am I ok. Will just have to take my chances

disappointing results
Despite fall and spring applications as recommend I had significant new grassy weeds in my Bermuda grass lawn before the lawn began to vigorously grow. Also, I could only find 5,000 sq. ft. bags for my 50,000 sq. ft. of lawn requiring excessive cost investment for mediocre results.

Very dissapointed
Bought and applied in Mid-April 2024 in Minnesota. Looked up application charts, and followed the weather to see when was the ideal time, and applied according to directions. Crabgrass is the worse I have seen and taking over lawn. Thought by buying brand name product and spending more I would get better results.

Had no affect on my weeds at all. I usually use a cheaper brand, but thought I'd see if this was better. After a couple of weeks, I used what I normally do, and my weeds are wilting after just 1 day.

Made my weeds worse!
I put down 2 bags on 8,000 sq ft of Bermuda and St. Augustine in September, and have more POA, chickweed, and crabgrass now (March) than I’ve ever had before. It’s almost like it contained seeds for the weeds.

Killed my at augustine
Applied it based on the recommended setting and it killed all of my st Augustine that was around a hard surface like a fence or a wall. I was really careful not to over apply as this happened to me once before but I didn’t connect it to the prevent until this year. Applied it right around Valentine’s Day when soil temp was high 50’s. Why did this happen? Now I have a real problem on my hands with a dead side yard and it’s all thanks to the Halts product.

Crabgrass Preventative NOT!
I bought the product last winter and come spring I put two applications on two months apart... why is crabgrass blooming near my edges next to walkways? I use Scott products and I thought that Halts would eliminate my crabgrass that started last year in the heat of June here in Idaho...

Stopped nothing!!!

I think it is actually poa annual seeds instead!
Northern AL...we'll start having spring-like weather in February which makes all the plants go crazy, especially weeds. I have two properties and in both I put a round of Halts down in February. One of the properties, with bad grass, I did another round in April. 2/3 of that lawn is covered in poa annual now, most all of the areas where there is dormant Bermuda grass. My other property, I have stands of poa annua where I've NEVER had it before, ever. And I think the seed I used to oversee last year contained goosegrass or something in the seeds, because I have that where I've never had it. bug again, I put down Halts, and the only thing that seemed to halt was the growing of grass while the weeds have gone insane. I used to swear by Scott's products, but I'm not so sure anymore. :(

1.71% Active Ingredient 98.29% Filler = Crabgrass
Used to be a staunch advocate of Scott's products until I read the label in my preemergent. I am done with stingy corporations that charge $29 for 98.29% filler and doesn't work (after a double application last year). Unacceptable and infuriating ....not to mention $60 lighter in the wallet!
