Description

Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is an all-purpose mix for sunny and shady areas. This mix works to quickly repair bare areas. In addition, each seed is coated to absorb 2X more water than uncoated seed. Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is designed for full sun and light shade, and has a coarse bladed texture with medium drought resistance. It can be used to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when air temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts® spreader to apply this product (please refer to spreader settings on product label). Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall. One 20 lb. bag of Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix has a new lawn coverage of 2,665 sq. ft. and an overseeding coverage of 8,000 sq. ft.

Step by Step Instructions

1. PREP

  • Rake area to loosen the top layer of soil and remove dead grass. For best results, add a thin layer of Scotts® Turf Builder® LawnSoil™ before applying seed.

2. APPLY

  • Apply using a Scotts® spreader. Lightly rake the seed into the soil. For best results, apply Scotts® Turf Builder® Starter Food for New Grass when seeding to help new grass grow in quicker and thicker.

3. WATER

  • Watering is a critical step to seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

4. CARE

  • Seed will begin to grow in 5-10 days. You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height. For best results, apply Scotts® Turf Builder® Starter® Food for New Grass when seeding. Do not apply a weed control product until after at least four mowings.

When and Where to Use

When to Apply

  • Fall and spring are the best times to plant grass seed because seed germinates best when temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix This is really nice grass seed. When I saw the description "Contractor mix" I didn't expect much. Sounds like the cheap carpeting. This stuff is really pretty green grass though and it didn't come up super sparse, it's nice & thick. Very good seed for the $

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really like this product Great mix for both a fast germinating seed and long term growth seed in a fairly large bag. I used it for spot seeding along with the Scotts top soil and am very pleased with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved my Backyard this mix of Scott's was not on my radar until I needed an economical way to seed some spots in my back yard! This was amazing! Quality, color, consistency - it was all there. the special water coating made this even better! Germination was about 7 days and mowed after 25 days...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for my rough conditions I recently cleared a thick wooded area on the other side of my fence and wanted to put down some seed before all the weeds and undergrowth started back up figuring the grass would be easier to mow and maintain plus look better than weeds. This product was spread in a rough and rocky area with no irrigation and plenty of shade. I had temperatures ranging from mid 70's to high 80's I spread it by hand just before a rain storm and we averaged rain about every 4 days I never added water myself. And grass started to germinate in about 5 days and now 3 weeks later the grass is thick and looks great around all of my Kansas rocks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great yield Seed was easy to broadcast, and within a week after watering, the bare areas started to look like the ground needed a shave. Within three weeks, I set the mower high, and I was able to give my new lawn a cutting. I am very pleased with the results and the nice lawn I was able to obtain with minimal effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference Was upset with the way may lawn looked after this summer heat. I guess my lawn was a little stressed out. I raked out the entire lawn and reseeded with Scotts Contractor Mix and fertilized with Scotts Starter Fertilizer. After 4 weeks my lawn looks like a golf course. I would recommend this products to anyone that wants to revitalize there lawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT SEED I HAVE BEEN USEING SCOTTS CONTACTOR SEED FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS I HAVE SUN & SHADE IT IS A GREAT SEED AT A GOOD PRICE I ALSO USE SCOTTS STARTER FERTALIZER WITH THIS SEED

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great germinating seed Perfect grass seed, no issues, covers a large area. Only issue so far is dense shade but I haven’t found any seed that will work in dense shade. Contractor blend should run a bit cheaper than Kentucky bluegrass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Follow the prep directions This seed worked well in the places where I had adequately prepped the soil. In areas where the prep was not done and I simply distributed the seed as if I was over seeding I did not seem to get much new grass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best I have found For years I have spent lots of money on various seed. I tried spring planting and fall planting, which never took as I have a shady, somewhat sloped yard and wet too in the spring. This is the only seed that has produced and I am very happy with it. Will continue to use in future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Grass Seed I spread out the seed with my hand when it was wet. It rained a couple more times and in 2 weeks grass was growing. Thanks Scotts

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good germination Applied to areas of my yard that were not growing . Took about a week to start . Also used a patch formula. The contractors seed with no mulch actually work better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product that's easy to use. I followed the directions on the package and prepared the ground before spreading the seed. After spreading the seed I covered it with the lawn soil. Before watering I spread the grass food and weed eliminator. Took me a little while to do this, but well worth the time and trouble. I now have grass that is now about 2 inches tall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good quality grass seed I only had a small area to seed, and I prepped the area and then sprinkled the grass seed, watered and waited. The seed germinated pretty quickly and filled in the area well. I didn't have to do a lot of watering like other grass seed. Now to see how it survives the summer heat and mowing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great seed for over seeding problem areas this seed was applied with a scotts spreader and kept moist so it would germinate quickly. New grass growth in 7-10 days and filling in nicely great coloring and blend of grass seeds did top dress with scotts land soil so germination seemed much quicker

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great Live next to alley , needed to extend the grass out couple ft, Put couple inches of topsoil on top of the gravel that was there and applied seeds , Watered it once every evening and kept ground broken up so to not make a crust on the dirt Within two wks had grass growing outstanding

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Only 80% germinated Coverage is good, however seems only 80% germinated. Purchased last fall to reseed, and never did it. This fall did entire front lawn and even a hatch pattern with a drop spreader for more uniform coverage. 3 weeks after seeding grass looks healthy, but still alot of seed I can see on the lawn that didn't germinate. Looks like I'll have to seed again in the spring more than I anticipated. Couldn't find an expiration date on the seed bag, but I'm guessing that's the reason for the failed seed. No weeds yet, which was the goal of the higher quality seed purchase

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Far below expectations. Beware. About 10 years ago, I used Scott’s Contractor grade seed mix. It was planted to replace a “wildflower” area and “wild” raspberries. Now, THAT seed was excellent. However, the “contractor” seed I sowed into bare areas in another part of the lawn cannot possibly anything resembling the product from 2014. The blades are bright-green, and looks a lot like nutsedge. I have worked in a garden center, and attended many Scotts classes. This was not something mentioned. If I only knew, I would have made a difference choice.I tried to upload an image, but tapping on the option does nothing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from did not grow well I have some problem areas in my yard where grass is hard to grow. Thinking that this Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is used by contractors that it would be a high quality all around shade and sun mix but it came up sparsely . We raked the areas up and planted the seed and then put a light coat of soil over and it still did not come up well. Kept it watered and was disappointed it the performance.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great in the Beginning, Not So at the End After preparing my soil, I sowed Scotts TurfBuilder Grass Seed Contractor's Mix. This product is a great value for the amount of seed you get compared to its price. It germinated very quickly, which got me excited, but just didn't stay healthy long enough, and it wasn't from a lack of caring. My neighbor who works for a road crew says this is the product they use. Comes up quickly, peters out just as quickly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Truff Builder low germination rate I had a pretty ugly yard after the winter rains so decided to start over. Added a thin layer of top soil. Seeded with contractos mix. Checked and there are about 15 seeds per square inch. Hand watered the first few days, several time per day. Checked and the soil and seeds look good so switched to the auto system 3 times ter day for a few minutes. Wait and after 10 days started to se some grass growing but only about 3 per inch. Checked and the seeds are there just not growing. At 15 days still very thin grass. Over seeded the lawn again at the same rate as the first time. New seeds about 10 per inch. 2 weks later and about 3 seeds growning. Over seeded again and now waiting. I purchased the 20 pound bag to seed 1000sq ft but I've used most of it already. The grass that is growing looks great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good, but not Great -- More Weeds Than Grass We recently moved into a new home that had a lack of lawn care from the previous owner. The lawn was in okay shape, but definitely needed a face lift. I spent many hours researching and preparing the lawn for am early fall overseed this summer (Sept. 2020). I decided to purchase this Contractor Mix. It gave good results initially, but as the summer progressed, I began to notice some of the grass was a lime green color compared to the darker green elsewhere. Upon looking throughout the entire lawn in which I overseeded, I noticed this lime green "grass" was all over the yard. I initially thought it was young grass that hasn't matured enough into a darker green color. However, that was not the case. I had several local Lawn Service Professionals stop by to give me an idea if this was merely the color of young grass and that it would "green up" as it matured or something else. All said that the lime green grass was in fact not grass at all, but a grassy weed called NutSedge (yellow). As I sit today, it is late November in Chicagoland and when I look out at my lawn, all I see is lime green Nutsedge, not healthy, green KBG or PRG. I will never buy Scotts products again. This has put me back a full season as I will need to deal with this Nutsedge issue before I can even build upon the grass that is currently growing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of Crabgrass I seeded an entire new lawn last spring/summer and thought I was getting really good results until I realized I had a ton of crabgrass. Now that everything is turning green again I can see all the dead patches where I had crab grass. Hopefully I can try to replant this year with better results...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked well at first. Planted a few bare areas in lawn with this seed, initially grew fast, filled in areas and looked good. After a Mill th or so and some hot weather most of the grass died.
