Description

Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is an all-purpose mix for sunny and shady areas. This mix works to quickly repair bare areas. In addition, each seed is coated to absorb 2X more water than uncoated seed. Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is designed for full sun and light shade, and has a coarse bladed texture with medium drought resistance. It can be used to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when air temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts® spreader to apply this product (please refer to spreader settings on product label). Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall. One 20 lb. bag of Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Contractor's Mix has a new lawn coverage of 2,665 sq. ft. and an overseeding coverage of 8,000 sq. ft.

Step by Step Instructions

1. PREP

  • Rake area to loosen the top layer of soil and remove dead grass. For best results, add a thin layer of Scotts® Turf Builder® LawnSoil™ before applying seed.

2. APPLY

  • Apply using a Scotts® spreader. Lightly rake the seed into the soil. For best results, apply Scotts® Turf Builder® Starter Food for New Grass when seeding to help new grass grow in quicker and thicker.

3. WATER

  • Watering is a critical step to seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

4. CARE

  • Seed will begin to grow in 5-10 days. You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height. For best results, apply Scotts® Turf Builder® Starter® Food for New Grass when seeding. Do not apply a weed control product until after at least four mowings.

When and Where to Use

When to Apply

  • Fall and spring are the best times to plant grass seed because seed germinates best when temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hope It's Just a Bad Bag Two weeks, no grass. Had a construction project ruin my yard. Made multiple soil amendments before even trying to seed. I used about 40 bags of manure and mushroom compost, working it in to the damage soil over a couple of weeks. Used $65 bag that was at Home Depot. After two weeks of watering and a really good sun, nothing. Still looking at dirt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not happy- Not a typical Scott product Not happy with this blend. I used it to seed a fairly large area that was dug up to replace my underground electric supply. Some of it grows very rapidly looking light green and stalky. It grows 2-3x faster than my established lawn. Hopefully , based on your feed back to others , it will "settle down" and grow/look more consistent with my established lawn.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a happy camper. Wish I could rate at zero I bought 2 of the large bags of this plus one large bag of the Rapid Grass. I mixed them all together to fill in areas after thatching and putting down fresh top soil in the bear areas. Its been down for 4 weeks now. Its watered as per the instructions and covered with a light (1/8") coat of peat moss. My results have been very poor. Just a small fraction of the seeds have germinated after 4 weeks. No I didn't put down any weed/crabgrass preventers prior. No I don't have my receipts from Home Depot or the empty bags. Just here to vent my frustrations and warn others against this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WHEN does this start working We roughed up the area that we spread this on April 20th and the seeds are still sitting where we put them. They look like someone got married here as they resemble rice grains. Not at all impressed. Have kept damp but haven't overwatered for fear it will kill these seeds. I bought a cheap bag of no name seeds at Ollies discount and those seeds have resulted in 5 inch high grass already. Dropped at same time in different areas of the yard but I didn't want to spend good money on the Ollies because the area that I dropped their seeds was an area we've always had problems keeping grass going but not this time. Will head back to Ollies to get more of that no name stuff.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It’s a bag of weeds! I recently rototilled an area of my front lawn, graded and put down clean soil. I put down Scotts Starter Fertilizer and Scotts Sunny and Shady Contractors Mix. I have it in a good watering schedule. Now, the entire area is green crabgrass. It’s evident that it is the product because I used this seed in a 2 x3 3 foot area on the other side of my front lawn and the exact same thing. Terrible product!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No grass growing at all. Wasted my time purchasing this grass seed from Home Depot at the recommendation of an associate after having used cheaper grass seed in the past to overseed to cover bare spots. Even used Scott's soil as reccomend and after a week of daily watering with temps in mid 70's not a SINGLE grass blade has sprouted. This seed is utter garbage

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two bags: No Grass I established a new lawn last year but got some washouts so knew I was going to reseed come spring. Fast forward to this year I waited til weather was right and used this product to overseed. I spent 20 hours over the course of a week raking. I even added some of the Scotts premium top soil in areas with weak grass. After overseeding and hand seeding in bare areas I have been diligently watering everyday. I was estatic after two weeks of no wash outs too! However now it’s going on 3 weeks and NOTHING I mean NOTHING is growing. Could not be more upset with this product. I will never buy Scott’s products again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too many tall grass I bought this product and over seeds my lawn hoping for thicker lawn. Now my lawn has too many of grass that has bigger blades. This type of grass grow taller, faster and stand out so obviously with light brighter green. This really ruins my even drank green looking lawn. Please see in the attached picture. I have seen other reviews mentioned this problem but no solution to it. Is there a way, a chemical, a solution to get rid of this kind of grass without to dig out my entire lawn?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Simply does not grow Decided to spend a little extra compared to other options and go with this product. Plus, the marketing department used the words "contractor's mix" so it must be top of the line, right? Well, put down a very, very, very generous amount of seed and kept it wet for at least three weeks straight. I think I could count the blades of grass on one hand... Coincidentally, a friend of mine who is an actual landscape contractor, came by after the first three weeks and put down some of his grass seed. Within a few days, we were already seeing results. Don't waste your money on this seed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from full of nut sedge weed Stay away from this seed its nothing but nut sedge weed. yes it germinates quick grows fast but its 80% weed. I had to use the nut sedge killer to get rid of it, now my lawn is practically dead. (I used the weed killer as direct). I couldn't believe it with the success ive had with other scotts seed products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Destroyed my lawn Last year we had underground sprinklers installed at my house in Connecticut. The sprinkler company used Scotts Contractor Mix to reseed all dug up areas and the rep raved about how it was a great product and I was already a fan of Scotts fertilizer products. Initially I was very happy with how quickly the seeds sprouted and filled in the bare areas. I also had a few other bare areas due to my dogs, so I purchased another bag of it a couple weeks later and reseeded those areas as well. All was great for a few months. Then I noticed that what seemed like a lot of crab grass took over those areas. I was very unhappy, since the rest of my lawn was great thin-bladed Kentucky Bluegrass, and this crab grass really stood out as yellow-green patches that grew twice as fast as the surrounding Bluegrass. So, in the fall I spent more money and killed all the crab grass with Round-Up. A few days later, I reseeded with Contractor Mix again (like an idiot) hoping for better results. New grass grew but stayed yellow-green during the winter and could still be seen against the rest of the Bluegrass. I figured it was just due to it being new grass. Well, now spring is here and I have come to the realization that what I thought was crab grass was not and that this seed is just full of Tall Fescue (which looks just like crab grass). It may be hardy, but it has and continues to destroy my lawn. It has thick clumpy blades of grass that do not cut well as they spring back up after mowing, grow way too quickly necessitating mowing more that 1x/week which is just not feasible, and just looks horrible! I'm going to have to spend more money this fall killing all this grass for a second time and replanting new Bluegrass. If you have a huge area like a farm meadow or something that needs to be seeded for erosion prevention or something and you don't really care what the grass looks like, I guess this mix would work for you. But if you have a nice lawn with Bluegrass, STAY AWAY! They don't say anything on the bag about this being grass seed that will take over your lawn with Tall Fescue (which should really be labeled a weed).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not grow I followed all the instructions for preparing my yard for this seed and after applying and watering every day for almost 3 weeks, not one seed has germinated.
